Depending on your student status, one or more of the following materials may need to be included with your application. Details about each are provided here. For a complete overview of the procedure, please see Applying for Admission.
Statement of Purpose
The personal statement should provide the department with information about the applicant not found in transcripts and other official documents. Applicants should provide an overview of degree and career objectives, and how participation in this graduate program will lead toward achieving them.
GRE Scores
Applicants are required to submit verbal, analytical and quantitative scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). If you have earned a doctoral level degree from an accredited institution in the United States, you may be exempt from the GRE requirement. In requesting that scores be sent to the UW Office of Graduate Admissions, use 4854 (University of Washington) under Score Report Recipients and 0702 for the department code.
The University of Washington accepts scores sent directly from Educational Testing Service (ETS) in paper roster, disk, or tape format. The GRE Web site can be found at www.gre.org
Letters of Recommendation
Letters should be authored by people who can judge your capacity to undertake graduate studies. These may include present or former professors, work supervisors or clients. Three letters are required.
Official Transcripts
Official transcripts from all collegiate institutions attended must be submitted. Transcripts must include the date and title of the degree and are not considered official unless they arrive sealed in their original envelopes.
TOEFL Scores (International Students)
Prospective international, immigrant and permanent resident students whose native language is other than English and who have not received bachelor's or master's degrees from institutions in countries where English is the native language are required to submit their scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum score of 500 is required.
Students offered admission with TOEFL scores between 500 and 580 (173 and 237 on the computerized tests) will be required to fulfill an English as a Second Language (ESL) requirement, with the exception of citizens of Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
TOEFL scores should be reported using our institution code 4854. Score reports over two years old (from the test date) are no longer valid.
