EARNING THE DEGREE

Coursework
The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics is designed to give you a working knowledge of several areas of applied mathematics, along with a specific area of application. Students complete courses to earn the degree's 36 required credits. More specifics on these courses, seminars and clubs can be found at the Curriculum page.

Final Examination for Master's Degree
The final examination is satisfied by a presentation on a topic of interest from class literature or the results of original research. Online students can make arrangements with their instructor to give this presentation in person, on tape or in writing. At least two members of the Graduate Committee must sign the Master's Application (warrant) after they are satisfied that the degree requirements are met and that the presentation is of high quality.

Program Plan
To ensure that studies progress and the degree requirements are met, students must fill out a program plan. This must also be approved by the student's appointed adviser and by the Graduate Committee. For full-time students, a program plan must be on file no later than the end of the third quarter of registration. Part-time students should file their program plan prior to the end of their first three quarters. The plan may be revised as the focus of studies changes; in that case, a new plan should be submitted for approval.

Satisfactory Progress
The student is expected to maintain at least a 3.2 grade point average. In addition, full-time students are normally expected to complete the requirements for an M.S. Degree by the end of their first year of study. Exceptions will be granted only by petition to the Graduate Committee. Regardless of whether a student is enrolled in full- or part-time study, the Graduate School requires that the M.S. Degree be completed in less than six calendar years of graduate study.

In accordance with Graduate School guidelines, students whose cumulative GPA since entering the program falls below 3.0 will receive a warning during the next quarter. Final probation will follow in the second quarter thereafter if their cumulative GPA remains below 3.0.

It is the student's responsibility to ensure all deadlines are met in order to graduate at the expected completion of study.

Single-Course Enrollment
Individuals not seeking the degree may enroll in single courses on a space-available basis with instructor permission. If approved, you will register for single courses with either Graduate Nonmatriculated (GNM) status or Nonmatriculated (NM) status.
